Last Friday, September 26th, Bono talked on CNN about the (RED) campaign. In case you want to check it, out here is the link. http://www.cnn.com/video/#/video/showbiz/2008/09/26/am.intv.bono.exclusive.cnn
One of the most significant things that Bono explains is how, as a result of the funds provided by various countries, Malaria will be eliminated by 2015. This is significant because this information means everyday 3000 African children will no longer die as a result of a simple mosquito bite. If you want to hear what other great things Bono has to say, take the time to watch it.
Another interesting tidbit, an INSPI(RED) team recently climbed Everest and took this fascinating picture to prove it!
Recently I have received a lot of questions about why spreading (RED) on campus is such an important idea, I hope this answers many of those questions and spurs more students to get activated in this never ending cause.
The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, the recipient of all (RED) funds, announced on Monday, August 4
th, that 97 countries have asked for $6.4 billion in grants this year – a nearly threefold increase. This is an encouraging sign that many low-income countries are preparing to ramp up their programs to battle AIDS, TB and malaria, and that the number of lives saved with The Global Fund’s help, approximately 2.5 million, will continue to rise.(RED) products have raised over $110 million for The Global Fund’s efforts to fight AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. http://www.theglobalfund.org/en/media_center/press/pr_080804.aspThere is so much work that still needs to be done in the fight against AIDS and every step a badger student takes brings more hope to the citizens of Africa. To get more involved or learn more please keep an eye out for events coming soon.
We have created a survey with the intent of gaining more knowledge on what students really know about (RED). This survey will help us further meet the needs at Wisconsin by letting us know what direction Badger (RED) should pursue in the future. Keep an eye out around the Union and at Franks Place for a chance to participate. Or you can take a moment to fill out this short survey now, but going to the link provided. It
doesn't take a lot of time, and it will truly help get an accurate view of just what students on campus know.

Why (RED)?
Of the 33.2 million people living with HIV/AIDS, Africa (which has just over 10% of the world's population) is home to 68% (22.5 million). The disease is the leading cause of death in Africa, with approximately 4,400 people dying every day from AIDS.
Women make up almost 61% of adults living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa and, as a result, women and children are the hardest hit by the disease. Every time an adult begins AIDS treatment including antiretroviral drugs, the survival of children becomes less precarious.
An estimated 11.4 million children in Africa have been orphaned because of HIV/AIDS already and this number is growing. More than 1,000 children, most within sub-Saharan Africa, are infected with HIV each day.
It costs just 40 cents to fund the two pills a day needed to keep someone with HIV in Africa alive. Still, more than 70% of the people in Sub-Saharan Africa live on less than two dollars a day and can not afford this medicine. AIDS is a preventable, treatable disease in Africa if the means exist to buy and administer the medicine that is needed. (RED) engages business and consumer power to do just that; provide people with the chance to stay alive, take care of their families and contribute to their communities - through the purchase of the two pills a day, and the support regime, they need to stay alive.
What Is (RED)?
(RED) was created by Bono and Bobby Shriver, Chairman of DATA to raise awareness and money for The Global Fund by teaming up with the world's most iconic brands to produce (PRODUCT)RED branded products. A percentage of each (PRODUCT)RED product sold is given to The Global Fund. The money helps women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa.
How It Works (RED)
Established brands partner with us and license the (PRODUCT) RED mark to create (PRODUCT) RED products and services. (PRODUCT) RED partners send a portion of the profits made on (PRODUCT) RED products directly to the Global Fund, to fight AIDS in Africa. The consumer does not pay extra for this. (RED) never handles this money – it is sent directly to the Global Fund.A licensing fee for use of the (PRODUCT) RED mark is used to manage and market the (RED) brand. This fee is paid by (PRODUCT) RED partners, and does not infringe on the amount of money they send to the Global Fund via sales of (PRODUCT) RED items.
